We at Classic Cycling love wool and think every cyclist should include a few pieces in their wardrobe.  Merino wool is the premiere wool for sports and for that reason nearly every wool product we carry is Merino wool.

Merino and its qualities:

Merino wool is common in high-end, performance athletic wear has been gaining popularity in cycling for years.

Several properties contribute to Merino's popularity in cycling, compared to wool in general and to other types of synthetic fabrics.

• Merino is excellent at regulating body temperature, especially when worn against the skin. A Merino wool baselayer provides warmth, without overheating the wearer. It draws moisture (sweat) away from the skin to provide natural wicking qualities.
• Like cotton, wool absorbs water (up to 1/3 its weight), but, unlike cotton, wool retains warmth when wet helping wearers stay warm during and after steneous winter cycling or outdoor events.
• Like most wools, Merino has anti-bacterial properties which cause the fabric to resist odors that are created by sweat.  For cycling this is a great benefit that will help that cap or gloves or other items to remain fresher longer. 
• Merino is one of the softest types of wool available, and for that reason is less likely to cause itching associated with wool thus making it the perfect winter baselayer material.
• Merino has an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio compared to synthetics and to other wools due to its ability to trap body heat similar to the way a sleeping bag warms its occupant.  A pair of Defeet wool socks or gloves are excellent to keep you insulated and dry during cycling or even when you want to go for a run.
